Lochter Report – Splendid Start to September

Down Lochter way last week the more convivial weather reminded me of the saying “September days are here with Summers best of weather and Autumns best of cheer”.

Now cheer was very much in plentiful supply to those fortunate individuals who chose to cast a line surrounded by the lush Lochter landscape.

With the water temperature cooling significantly it was as if the ‘fishing gods’ had flicked a switch as there was almost a frenzy of rod bending action for those who dared to fish sub surface.

This coupled with another timely re-stocking with our own lively Lochter trout this time ranging from minimum 3lb to 8lb meant that the battle lines were drown for some anxious knot testing tussles.

Intermediate or sink tip lines seemed to be the order of the day and one consummate exponent of this in tandem with a thrice of small nymphs was Jim Hendry, up from Dundee with two fishing buddies. He landed 19 fish on diawl bachs, crunchers and hares ears, his best being 9½ lb.

Graham Will from Newmacher went the buzzer route using either black or dennis the menace buzzers and he was rewarded with 11 fish.

Harry Hughes from Kemnay on a sweep line and long leader skillfully got 9 fish to the net on a selection of black, lime green and an unusual orange buzzer.

Looking through the return sheets, Graham Duthie had 11 fish on mostly lures. Sandy Scobie also had 11 on buzzers and diawl bachs. Danny Brown used small lures to get 10 fish and Alan Coutts on his first outing to Lochter had 9 fish on cormants.

It has to be mentioned that over the weekend there were many flies lost and casts broken due to the force of the takes and runs from our ‘fine fettled’ fish, so to save exasperated looks to the heavens it may be prudent to up your breaking strain to at least 10lb.

There is a saying that a wise man always learns something new when he loses a fish! Lets hope Lochter doesn’t become a breeding ground of geniuses!
An important reminder that the Scottish Youth Team Fundraising Singles Competition takes place at Lochter this Sunday 13th September. Entry is £25 with a chance of winning £500 if you have the best score over any two heats. It’s all for a good cause and a take away lunch is included in the price.
